On July 15, 2024, Shamrock Foods proudly sponsored the first-ever Chef Challenge at the Arizona Health Care Association (AHCA) Convention & Expo. The event was a culinary celebration designed to recognize the exceptional skills of healthcare culinary teams from across Arizona, bringing together creativity, innovation, and passion for food in a dynamic competition.
The Chef Challenge was modeled after the highly successful competition hosted by the Colorado Health Care Association since 2017. With guidance from Amy Chiaro, Colorado Account Executive for Shamrock Foods and Master of Ceremonies, the Arizona Health Care Association successfully replicated this exciting occasion. This collaboration set the stage for what promises to be an annual tradition in Arizona.
The Road to the Finals
Throughout the early summer months, culinary teams from healthcare facilities across Arizona submitted their best recipes for evaluation. A panel of experts carefully reviewed each entry based on creativity, feasibility, and presentation. From this competitive pool, four teams earned a coveted spot in the finals, held live at the AHCA Convention & Expo.
As the excitement unfolded, the teams went head-to-head in a fast-paced and intense final showdown. Their culinary talents were put to the test as they created exquisite dishes under the watchful eyes of seasoned judges.
Meet the Judges
The judging panel featured some of the most respected names in the culinary industry, ensuring that each dish was evaluated with expertise and precision:
- Kenneth Paradis, CORE Food Service Distribution Sales Team – Arizona
- Chef David Miles, Center of Plate Specialist – Shamrock Foods Company
- Chef Patrick Fegan, Branch Chef – Arizona, Shamrock Foods Company
- Linda Miranda, MS, RDN, CHWC, Nutrition Services Manager – Shamrock Foods Company
Their combined expertise in culinary arts and nutrition services ensured that every element of the competitors' dishes was meticulously assessed.
And the Winners Are…
Prizes were awarded to the top three teams, but only one team earned the prestigious title of Chef Challenge champions for 2024.
After an intense and thrilling competition, the winning team from Mirabella at ASU, part of Retirement.org, emerged victorious. The talented chefs—John Segerstrom, Vanessa Hall, and Ryan Staroszik—claimed the top spot and the honor of displaying the Chef Challenge trophy for one year.
The event was a true showcase of the incredible talent within Arizona’s healthcare culinary community, and it left attendees eager for next year’s competition.
Looking Ahead: Chef Challenge 2025
The Chef Challenge is set to become an annual highlight of the AHCA Convention & Expo, with next year’s application process opening in April 2025. Culinary teams are encouraged to submit their best recipes, along with a photo, for consideration. The judging panel will once again assess entries based on creativity and feasibility before narrowing down the top contenders. This is a fantastic opportunity for healthcare culinary teams to showcase their talents and earn recognition among their peers.
